I am Good Enough. Yes, that is right. I am good enough.
Recently a facebook post went viral. This video showed a middle schooler presenting a "poem" about how she was "good enough" to be herself. How she tried to be like others. To fit in. To put on the many "masks" we wear in order to be what others want us to be, or what we think we need to be for others. Or, to fit in.
In Middle School.
We all think of this happening just in middle school, or high school, but I can say it happens all your life. Especially to women. If we are not doing whatever the culture deems impressionable and important, then we are not good enough.
If we do not dress like those who the culture deems important or "in", then we are not good enough.
If we do not follow along and keep up with the Joneses, we are not good enough.
If we do not actively follow you and do what you ask me to do, then we are not good enough.
If we do not appear like those who are deemed important or who have set the cultural norms, then we are not good enough.
Ugh. I am so tired of this. I am so tired of the rampant bullying and exclusion that is in the world today. And, I am not even talking about the political environment today. I am talking about the small scale, in my hometown type of activities that are representative of the above statements.
And, it happens all through adulthood and does not stop in middle or high school.
So, my personal project is going to be "I Am Good Enough". I will be looking for people who wish to participate in my project; showcasing their true, authentic selves just like they are. Because you are good enough.
Check my facebook page for a posting about this soon.
